CITY leaders will get together to discuss whether a combined authority should represent the Solent region.

The leader of Portsmouth City Council, Councillor Donna Jones, has been invited by Southampton’s leader, Cllr Simon Letts, to talk more about the idea of bringing the leaders of the region’s councils together into one organisation with a range of extra powers.

Should the proposals ever come to light, it could lead to a ‘metro mayor’ being appointed which would see greater control on a local level over how billions of pounds could be spent – paving the way for thousands of new jobs to be created.

Concerns have been raised however that the move could see local councils being wiped out.
