DOCK workers in Portsmouth could be left without adequate safety protection if new rules come in.

The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers says proposals by the Health and Safety Executive to water-down safety regulations relating specifically to dockyards could increase deaths.

The regulations would be substituted for a set of guidelines only which employers can choose to follow.

‘Five times more dock workers die than the national average for workplace deaths so the last thing the port industry needs is weaker safety measures,’ said APIL president Karl Tonks.
