THIRTY new jobs will be created with the opening of a discount store.

Poundworld is opening its Gosport store next week with 30 roles and more temporary staff needed for Christmas.

That unit has been empty for many years so to get a national company into Gosport is very positive.

Councillor Mark Hook

The shop is opening on the high street in the former Post Office unit which has been mostly empty for years. Since the Post Office moved in March, the entire unit has been unused.

Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Keith Farr will lead the official opening next Thursday at 10am.

Leader of Gosport Borough Council Councillor Mark Hook welcomed the new store.

He said: ‘I’m delighted that they have decided to move in.

‘That unit has been empty for many years so to get a national company into Gosport is very positive.’

He added: ‘One of the things that people are saying is that there are a number of £1 shops in Gosport.

‘But although we have 99p Stores, the others like Zodiac and Poundstretcher sell a range of products so this is first strictly £1 store we have.

‘It’s a retail store and people say they want to see more shops in the high street so it ticks all the boxes.’

Cllr Hook added that £1 stores are full of major manufacturers and ‘gone are the days of cheap shops being end of market’.

Along with the official opening, there will also be face painting over the weekend.

Store manager Raza Aslam said: ‘We’re really excited to open our first store in Gosport.

‘We’re also delighted that we’re able to create 30 new jobs in the town.

‘We’ve got a great opening celebration planned including face painting for kids taking place across the opening weekend.’

The Christmas temporary roles will be available at the store in the next couple of weeks.
