Pub holds a charity rucksack event

A pub is teaming up with Portsmouth Football Club to help the homeless.

Amy Pieri, general manager of the Bird in Hand pub in Lovedean, approached staff with an idea to launch The Rucksack Event 2017.

The pub is calling for residents to fill rucksacks with necessities including tinned food, toiletries, sleeping bags, a coat, socks, hats, lip balm and even dog food.

The packs will be taken to Portsmouth Football Club on November 11.

If you cannot afford a rucksack, the team advise that single items will also be accepted as no donation is too big or too small.

Assistant manager Hayley Davidson said: ‘Everyone here cares about homeless people. We don’t want anyone to be sleeping rough.

‘When Amy approached us a few weeks ago we backed the campaign and launched it almost immediately.

‘There is a big plastic container that greets you when you enter the pub. Every day people turn up and fill it with sacks and goods. The turnout has been amazing.

‘We have a room upstairs that is already filled with generous donations.’

On Sunday, staff pooled money together so that manager Amy could purchase more items to contribute.

Hayley said: ‘We’ve put our poster up online and it has been shared quite a bit.

‘We’re still encouraging people to come down and donate as there is plenty of time.’

Hayley added that this is the pub’s first big campaign that she has been involved with and the team plan to carry on the hard work.
