PUPILS had fun learning about flying in a visit from a pilot.

Springfield School, in Farlington, had a lesson in flight from Southampton Airport’s airside policy and planning officer, Mike Glen.

As part of the school’s library theme week on the subject of flight Mr Glen, who is a qualified pilot, gave the students an insight into the mechanics and principles of flight, before challenging the students to construct their own paper aeroplane.

Mr Glen said: ‘I was impressed with the thought and care that the students put into planning their paper planes.

‘It was clear that they’d taken on board the principles of lift, thrust, drag and weight and were determined to create a design that would fly as far as possible. The winning plane was very impressive. Maybe the winning team are future aircraft designers in the making.’
