WORKS to improve the county’s cricket ground will bring major benefits to the area, according to an MP.

Energy secretary and Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne is backing the improvements for the Rose Bowl at Hedge End, and has praised the completion of stage one of the £48m development project.

Mr Huhne said: ‘The Rose Bowl is establishing itself as the most impressive cricket facility in Britain with the best facilities at the cutting edge of modern sport.’

Two new £9m stands provide covered seating for 4,800 spectators, lifting the Rose Bowl’s capacity to 25,000.

The stands were first used as England took on Sri Lanka in the third and final match of the npower Test Series.

Further plans include a four-star hotel and a 18-hole golf course.
