WHITELEY shopping centre has been crowned as one of the best in Europe.
The £84m centre took 98 weeks to build and opened last May.
Last week it beat shopping centress in Leipzig, Germany and Istanbul, Turkey to win best new medium-sized development at The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) awards.
The annual awards recognise the best retail developments in Europe and a ceremony was held in Istanbul.
This year, 12 schemes in six countries were short-listed and the jury visited each centre to decide the winner.
Whiteley Shopping Centre’s award was collected by manager Neil Carter.
Mr Carter said: ‘I am so proud to receive this prestigious award on behalf of Whiteley Shopping Centre’s fantastic management team.
‘Whiteley has a great mix of shops, restaurants and cafés that cater for local people, who really make Whiteley so special.
‘With the new cinema and restaurant extension set to open in summer 2015, there really is no stopping us.’
ICSC managing director, Mike Morrissey, said: ‘This year’s ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards continue to showcase the very best of the industry.
‘Whiteley has established new industry standards in development, sustainability, design and performance.
‘It offers some of the leading retailers in the UK and is an exciting place to shop, eat and relax, giving the growing population a new state-of-the-art town centre, a new-generation retail destination that has been a story of partnership, innovation, technology and community.’
Recent additions to Whiteley include Monsoon, Wagamama and Yo! Sushi.
