A REPORTED gas leak and a power cut has led to several shops in Fareham closing today.

The power went out at shops along West Street at around 6.15am this morning.

Shops affected include McColls, H&T pawnbrokers, Naomi House and several other charity shops along the same stretch, and several other businesses.

A spokesman from SSE said: ‘We are aware of the power cut on West Street and our engineers are on site. However we understand that because of a reported gas leak affecting the same area, the gas network also have engineers on site. Our power engineers cannot begin work until the gas problem has been resolved. We will get to work on it as soon as possible and we apologise to those affected and are grateful for their patience.’

A spokesman from Southern Gas Networks said: ‘We have just arrived on the site after a member of the public called us earlier this morning to report a smell of gas. We are working to investigate and make any necessary repairs. We will be speaking with the SSE engineers to work to rectify the situation as quickly as we can.’
