THEIR chips are golden and crispy and have beaten more than 800 other chippies to be named as the county’s best.
Mother Kelly’s, in Southampton Road, in Paulsgrove, received the most votes in Chippy’s Chip of the Year award.
Owner of Mother Kelly’s Trevor West said it is good for his staff to get recognised for their hard work.
‘It’s fantastic that we won the award,’ said Trevor.
‘It is good that the staff are getting recognised for what they do and that they are obviously doing their job well.
‘We’re often known to our customers for our quality fish, which is fresh, and the range that we have.
‘So it’s good that our chips are also of a high standard.
‘Everyone who comes into our shop has chips.
‘Whether it is just chips or fish and chips or something else – you always have chips.
‘So they are an important part of a fish and chip shop. I am happy that we won.’
To take part in the awards, Trevor received a nomination pack which had bunting, voting cards customers could fill out and send off as well as an online way for them to vote.
Trevor added that he was surprised Mother Kelly’s had won but he always expected to do well.
He said; ‘We have been here for 28 years so we are quite well known.
‘We have a steady flow of customers and we are the busiest shop around so I always expected us to do well in the competition, even with the number of other competitors.’
In total, 840 chip shops from across Hampshire took place in the Choice Chip Awards.
Trevor added: ‘We have always been known to have the full package and that is what we concentrate on.
‘We have won many awards over the year for a range of things so it is always nice winning them.
‘It’s great for the staff seeing as they make them.’
The shop also has a branch in North Street, Emsworth.
The Choice Chip Awards are run by the Potato Council in recognition of Chip Week 2014 which started yesterday.
