Southampton Airport today announced a big rise in passenger figures.

The airport welcomed 148,000 customers in March which is a 14 per cent increase year-on-year.

Dave Lees, managing director of Southampton Airport, said: ‘Our passengers have been making the most of the final weeks of snow; heading for the Pyrenees and Alps on ski breaks.’

Figures show that international passengers going through the airport increased by 8 per cent and domestic passengers were 17 per cent up on 2014.

Flights to and from Aberdeen, Leeds, Newcastle, Belfast and Manchester within the UK and Dublin, Amsterdam, Lleida (Pyrenees), Grenoble, La Rochelle and Faro internationally have experienced growth year on year.

Mr Lees added: ‘Southampton Airport is now gearing up for an eventful summer season with several exciting new destinations being launched in the coming weeks.’

The four new routes will take off from the airport include Antwerp with VLM, Milan and Corsica with Flybe, a peak summer service to Lorient with Eastern Airways.

Holidaymakers will soon also be able to book through their favourite tour operator, as Thomas Cook, Thomson, First Choice and Prestige begin programmes from Southampton Airport next month.
