THE Southern Co-operative store in Wickham has been presented with the 2013 Community Business Award by Wickham Parish Council, in appreciation of its contribution to the local community.

Not only has the shop presented both Wickham Scout Group and Meon Valley Lions Club with £10,000 from its community support card scheme, but every week staff go into Wickham Church of England Primary School to mentor pupils and help them learn to read.

They also go along to Ashley Down Nursing Home each month to spend time chatting with residents living there.

The council described the store’s work as ‘excellent’.

Pete Wearn, who has been the store’s retail business manager for the past two years, said: ‘It’s great for the store and colleagues who work here to have this recognition from the people of Wickham and we are thrilled to have won this award.

‘As a co-operative, giving back to the community is part of our core values and it is important for the store to be part of local life here in Wickham.’

The shop will soon be announcing which local causes will share in a £20,000 grant from its 2013 fund.
