In the small hotels category, The Clarence came fourth, seventh in Europe and 16th in the world. And for best service, it was fifth in the UK, seventh in Europe and 18th in the world.

Jenny Brunning runs the hotel in Clarence Road with her husband Mark, 54, and said she was thrilled with the accolade.

She said: ‘We were very pleased for ourselves and for our staff because they work extremely hard.

‘They are always striving for something better.

‘The awards are a vindication of all the hard work and efforts of our staff.

‘We’d like to thank all of our lovely guests who have taken the time and effort after their stay to leave a review.

‘Our rooms are very quirky. And we are an adults-only hotel so guests have to be 18 or over.’

Jenny, 45, said she thinks people’s views on the type of hotel they stay in has changed.

‘Nowadays, people have high expectations,’ she said.

‘They want something different from what they have at home.

‘They want it to be better than what they have in their normal day-to-day life.’

The hotel has air conditioning in each room. And all have a movie stream, which means guests can watch a variety of films.

‘Everything is of extremely good quality,’ Jenny added.

‘The hotel is extremely popular with couples who are celebrating an anniversary. A lot of our clientele is 40-plus.’

Award winners were determined based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected in a single year from TripAdvisor travellers worldwide.
