THE future of Mothercare in Portsmouth’s Commercial Road, and the Early Learning Centre in Fareham Shopping Centre has been thrown into doubt.

Mothercare, which owns both brands, announced it would be shutting 111 of its 311 stores during the next three years.

The locations of the stores that will be closed are not yet known, but the firm said yesterday it wanted to keep 123 Mothercare shops and 27 Early Learning Centres.

The news came on the back of results showing the chain’s sales have dwindled in the UK.

But the firm’s chief executive Alan Parker said: ‘This marks the beginning of a three-year turnaround and I am confident we will deliver a sustained recovery.’
