STUDENTS showed off their engineering skills at HMS Sultan in Gosport.

The Engineering Challenge run by the Royal Navy and local businesses set maths and physics sixth formers a problem to solve during the course of the academic year. The students presented prototypes of their solutions to Commodore Mark Slawson, who is head of Sultan – the navy’s engineering base.

Maddie Moore and Michael Rawat, both 17, from Bay House School, Gosport, were tasked by computer firm Xyratex to develop a more efficient system of transporting hard drives around factories.

Maddie said: ‘It’s been a tough challenge but we’ve really enjoyed it. We’d never done anything like this before.’
