A FAMILY-RUN business has been praised for its longevity and innovation after scooping national awards.

Fareham firm Barnbrook Systems won supplier of the year at the ‘Oscars of the light rail industry’ and was highly commended in the technical innovation category for its intelligent remote monitoring technology.

The Fareham Park Road manufacturer of electro-mechanical switching devices, claimed the honours at the Light Rail Industry Awards at the Honourable Artillery Company headquarters in London.

Chief technology officer Andrew Barnett was presented with the trophies by transport minister, Baroness Kramer, and news presenter Nicholas Owen.

Earlier this year, Barnbrook Systems won the National Passenger Safety title at the UK Rail Industry Awards and was a finalist for technology, innovation and business excellence.

Andrew said: ‘We have never been entered for any awards until the past 12 months and so we have made a fantastic start.

‘We didn’t expect to do quite so well in the company of such strong competition in such prestigious awards so it was a wonderful surprise.

‘Comments by the judges referred to us as a long-established family business with a very innovative and interesting future ahead of us.

‘The citation was read out to the whole auditorium so it was a very proud moment for us.’

Barnbrook won Supplier of the Year in the under 10m euro category for its design, manufacture and supply of products for the light rail industry. It was highly commended in Technical Innovation category for its Blue Cube device.

Blue Cube technology can be used in various applications to intelligently monitor systems then remotely report in real time to identify safety, reliability and maintenance issues.

It can be used for monitoring engine performance and temperature or fuel levels in helicopters.
