A TEMPORARY pool will be built so that swimmers don’t miss out while a leisure centre is undergoing a £1.5m refurbishment this summer.
Councillors gave permission for the pool to be built on Fareham Leisure Centre’s car park to allow Everyone Active, which runs the centre in partnership with Fareham Borough Council, to carry on giving swimming lessons.
The car park will see a loss of 36 spaces because of the pool, but councillors gave permission for the car park to be extended by 23 spaces to compensate for some of the loss.
Two residents wrote to the council to object to the temporary pool, with concerns about noise, expense and the loss of car parking spaces.
Executive spokesman for leisure Cllr Connie Hockley, said: ‘This is an exciting step in the refurbishment and the replacement of the pool.
‘The temporary pool will ensure esidents can continue to swim during the construction It’s important to us that customers have as little disruption to these facilities as possible. I look forward to the new pool opening.’
As previously reported, the 34 year old facilities on Park Lane are getting an upgrade including the refurbishment of the two pools, new changing rooms and a pool water filtration plant.
The works are expected to start this summer and be finished by November.
The temporary pool will be 6m by 18m and enclosed by an aluminium frame structure covered in UPVC.
