AN ice rink will be opened for two weeks next month to give Southsea a bit more Christmas cheer.

It will be the only rink open in the city over the winter, according to the company behind the temporary addition to the Southsea seafront.

It is hoped the temporary ice rink will help boost awareness of a new, ‘high quality’ cafe opening at Canoe Lake.

Earlier this year, The News reported a run-down bowling pavilion south of Eastern Parade will be turned into a cafe.

Greens is set to open in December and will offer good quality food and drink at affordable prices, according to Ed Goodenough, a spokesman for Canoe Lake Leisure Ltd.

He said: ‘We are looking at opening in December with a synthetic ice rink which will be £3 per person. People will also be able to get a free hot chocolate any time from when we open until the end of March.

‘We will have it open for two weeks over Christmas to promote the cafe.

‘We will also be holding a charity night to try and raise some money for local causes.

‘We are hoping to get involved with the community and get a couple of Christmas stalls down there to bring some more people along.’

Asked how many people are expected to use the rink during the two weeks of it being open, he said: ‘We are hoping that we will get a couple of hundred people each day.

‘The sessions will be 30 minutes each and we can fit up to 25 on the rink at once.’

The ice rink will be temporarily housed on new all-purpose tennis courts.

‘The idea came from the general manager who will be overseeing all of the site once it is opened,’ he explained.

‘We have got eight grass courts and we are installing four all-purpose courts.

‘We thought it would be a great idea and with Gunwharf Quays not having an ice rink this year, it is going to be the only one in the city this winter.

‘At the moment, we have still got builders on the site but we are hoping to have the ice rink open for the middle of next month.

‘Once the cafe is open, we are going to be serving hot meals, snacks to take away and to eat in.

‘We will also have some great coffee for people to enjoy in the cafe or to take out.’
