WHITELEY village looks set for an exciting 2013 as its new shopping centre nears completion.
The 302,000sq ft development will open in the spring and includes brand names such as River Island, Clarks, Mamas and Papas, Schuh, Paperchase, Claire’s, Moss, Costa and Prezzo.
The news that has excited some of Whiteley’s elderly residents has been the arrival of Marks & Spencer.
Mareen McKenzie, 75, of Lovage Road, said: ‘They have spent a fortune developing the area.
‘We are looking forward to Marks & Spencer and the cinema. Once we have those we’ll have no reason to get the bus to Fareham!’
Her sister Betty McKenzie, 80, also of Lovage Road said: ‘It’s absolutely brilliant.’
Other confirmed names include H&M, Boots, JD Sports, Sports Direct, Bank, Frankie & Benny’s and Starbucks. Cineworld intends to put forward plans to build a nine-screen cinema which, if passed, will be completed in 2014.
When the centre is completed it will create around 1,000 jobs and serve a catchment of 1.2m people with an estimated £3.1bn of potential annual spend.
