Concerns were raised that a lack of hotel accommodation in Portsmouth was stopping organised tours going to Southsea.
Freddie Emery-Wallis told the libraries and museums comittee that the development, estates and parks comittees should be asked to reassess the hotel situation in Portsmouth.
‘It is curtailing our resort development. Southsea is attracting more and more tourists, in line with city council policy, yet we lack suitable hotels to accommodate tour groups,’ he said.
Members discussed a report from the director of museums, KJ Barton, which stated that a Dickens Tour of England had been arranged with a major travel agent in Chicago.
Mr Barton said that although hotel accomodation had been arranged he was concerned that more hotels of the right type were needed to put up the tourists.
