FAMILY butchers Harriotts of West Meon is celebrating after being named Butcher of the Year.
Nick Harriott from the West Meon butchers won the title in the 2014 Hampshire Life Food & Drink Awards which recognise the importance of the food and drink industry in the county.
Nick said he was thrilled to win and paid tribute to the whole team which serves customers in the Meon Valley and beyond.
‘We are committed to providing our customers with a wide range of local products and we are delighted that our efforts and our experience have been recognised with such a prestigious honour,’ he said.
‘My family has run a shop in the Meon Valley since 1892 so we have been part of the community for many years.’
He said that despite the popularity of supermarkets, many customers still value the quality of meat from a local butcher and the advice and expertise of butchers in preparing the meat, advising on the best cuts and the added bonus of supporting local producers.
With the trophy now taking pride of place in the window of Harriots, the team is turning its attention to Christmas with Nick predicting bumper sales of turkeys and trimmings.
‘We are approaching our busiest few weeks of the year,’ he said.
‘Turkey still continues to be the most popular meat for the Christmas table but people are becoming more adventurous and this year we have a lot of orders for goose.’
