THE public are being warned about a bogus trading standards officer operating in Waterlooville.

The bogus official claims to be investigating a rogue trader saying he had secured a refund of more than the price the customer originally paid for the work.

He then asks the victim to give him the extra money in the form of a cheque before he can arrange to make the refund by bankers draft.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire County Council said: ‘Trading Standards would like to reassure the public they would never ask victims of crime for money and these callers are criminals posing as officials.

‘Residents should always check the identification of callers.

‘If they have any doubt as to the authenticity of someone claiming to be from Hampshire Trading Standards they should call the police.’
