TWO train companies have announced their fares are set to rise by an average of almost six per cent.

Across the country train fares will increase by an average of 5.9 per cent in January, the Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) has said.

South West Trains, which runs services between Portsmouth and London Waterloo, said its average price rises in January will be lower than the national figure, at 5.8 percent.

Southern, which runs trains across the south coast and to London Victoria, said its increase was 5.9 per cent.

Michael Roberts, chief executive of Atoc, said: ‘Money raised through fares helps pay for new trains, faster services and better stations.’

New fares for 2012 are available at southernrailway.com and southwesttrains.co.uk.
