A CABLE fire is causing long delays for rail passengers coming in and out of Portsmouth by train.

Many trains have been delayed and others cancelled between Portsmouth and Southsea station and Portsmouth Harbour.

Delays are expected to continue until 3.30pm.

A spokesman for South West Trains said the fault was caused by a cable fire between Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour stations.

He said: ‘The traction power supply has been turned off and staff are en route to deal with the problem.

‘We are sorry for any disruption this causes to your journey this afternoon.’

Stagecoach Buses are accepting passengers on buses 20, 21 and 23 in the Portsmouth area.

Some diesel trains operated by First Great Western are still able to use the line, and passengers with South West Trains tickets can also use these services.
