In Gosport, 577 people claimed jobseekers allowance in September compared to 629 in August.

And in Fareham, the figure dropped from 441 to 425.

Across the south east, the figure was stable with 59,800 claiming in September compared to 59,700 in August.

David McArthur is the senior account manager for Job Centre Plus across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire.

He said: ‘The figures are absolutely amazing. It’s a credit to local businesses right across the area.

‘Unemployment has fallen to the lowest rate since 2008. The south east has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the UK region.’
