Vodafone UK has announced a multi-million pound investment across the city to extend its 3G and 4G mobile coverage to more than 98 per cent of Portsmouth’s population.

The growth of smartphones has created a massive demand on networks

The upgrade forms part of Vodafone’s approximate £1bn nationwide network and service investment this year, with a similar amount having been invested in 2014.

Dr Rob Matthews, senior community relations manager, was among those who spent the day visiting eight locations in the city which would benefit from improved mobile coverage, including Gunwharf Quays, Victory Gate and Southsea Castle.

He said: ‘Everybody wants to stay connected. The growth of smartphones has created a massive demand on networks.

‘People hope to get the services they get at home with broadband when they are on the move.

‘We have invested heavily in Portsmouth to make sure people have access to the 4G network.’
