SOUTHERN Water’s repair teams have fixed nearly 200 burst water mains already this year.

The firm said this was in part thanks to the 1,601 customers who have called the company’s 24-hour Leakline to alert them to emergencies.

Helen Simonian, from Southern Water, said the amount of water potentially lost along 13,600 kilometres of water mains has been significantly reduced.

She said: ‘Our leakage teams have been working harder than ever to find and repair leaking pipes – but we also rely on the public telling us when they spot what could be a leak.’

Last year, 23,205 people called the Leakline number on 0800 820 999.
