AN ORGANISATION set up to promote words is closing its shop in Havant.

Wordsouth opened in The Pallant last year in a bid to promote the written and spoken word, holding exhibitions and creative writing events.

But the bookshop will close today as Anne Jenkins, who set up the not-for-profit organisation, believes there are not enough people who want to buy paper books.

However, Wordsouth will continue its presence in Havant, with a monthly Poetry Open Mic event at The Spring.

There will be also be monthly book groups at La Bonne Baguette, in West Street, which used to house The Pelham Bookshop.

Mrs Jenkins, from Chichester, said: ‘The Spring with its regular exhibitions is an excellent space to house our poetry events. The surrounding artwork will help us maintain the atmosphere we have created at events at The Pallant, where we try to encourage exploration of the space where words and image meet.’
