ABSEILERS have began applying a coat of gold paint to the Emirates Spinnaker Tower.

Workers are painting the top of the structure after work was done before the America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth to turn the bottom half blue.

It was agreed with the Dubai airline giant that the tower would be painted blue and gold after it secured the Portsmouth landmark’s naming rights this summer.

The original plan was to paint the tower red - but that sparked uproar as residents and Pompey supporters felt it resembled the colours of Southampton Football Club.

The painting will be completed in two parts, first the paint will be applied as a solid colour, which takes around 4 to 5 weeks to complete and then afterwards the overlay will be applied to create a gold metallic finish.

Councillor Donna Jones, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘The specially ordered gold paint has arrived and the painting is underway.’

Painting the tower is weather dependent and poor conditions could mean work needs to be rescheduled. Application of the gold paint is expected to be completed by the autumn, and following this more Emirates logos will be applied.
