Championship victory
Pompey captain Reg Flewin with the championship trophy at Fratton Park at the end of the 1948-49 season, alongside club president Field Marshal Montgomery
But it was not all heartbreak that year for Pompey and their legions of fans.
Of course, they ended that 1948-49 season as league champions.
In this picture taken at Fratton Park, captain Reg Flewin holds the trophy watched by club president Field Marshal Montgomery.
Monty had accepted an invitation to become president while on a visit to the city in March 1944.
The club retained the championship the following season.

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 09:55 AMWas there that day - spectators flooded onto the pitch - shouting and cheering and Pompey CHimes ringing out .Great day. Len Phillips is in the picture and between Reg Flewin and the guy wearing spectacles (to Flewins right) is the head of Harry Ferrier left back at the time.
