For Wezley Sebastian it is likely to be case of first and last. His debut in a lead role with Portsmouth Players this week is likely to mark his farewell to the company as he prepares to head into a hit musical in the West End.
He goes from playing Bobby Child in Crazy For You at the Kings, Southsea, into Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, with Jason Donovan at the Palace Theatre in London.
Wezley, who played a juvenile lead role in Annie Get Your Gun with Players' junior section in 1994, has long had a special affection for Crazy For You, the show that fits a new story to Gershwin numbers originally composed for other settings.
The songs include I Can't Be Bothered Now, I Got Rhythm, They Can't Take That Away From Me, But Not For Me, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Embraceable You and Someone To Watch Over Me.
'It was the first show I ever saw in the West End,' Wezley says. 'My nan took me to see it when I was 12.
'I have played it twice before, in Stevenage and Tunbridge Wells, and also choreographed it for Fareham Musical Society.
'It has an amazing score and it's a delight to be playing this role in my home town before going into Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert.'
Wezley learnt his craft at South Downs College where he staged How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, then worked on cruise ships for a year as a dancer and vocalist for a year before staging La Cage Aux Folles with his own Starfish production company at Ferneham Hall and A Chorus Line at Portsmouth's New Theatre Royal.
But it was his Trashville Tennessee cabaret show, in which he has performed in clubs and bars across the country and in Scandinavia, that equipped him for the role of Miss Understanding in Priscilla - a show about drag queens touring Australia in a bus.
That begins rehearsals in London in January before opening in spring - 'and the costumes alone cost £1.5m,' Wezley says.
His co-star in Crazy For You is Rachel Potts. The production runs until Saturday, daily at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.Tickets: (023) 9282 8282.
