A FAREHAM building company has been fined for dumping rubbish on an illegal waste site in the New Forest.
Magistrates convicted Swanwick Construction Group Ltd of getting rid of the waste and failing to provide correct documentation.
The firm, from Swanwick, near Fareham, denied the charges, which were brought by the Environment Agency. But it was fin
ed £33,000 with £1,800 costs.
The agency was tipped off in September 2006 that work to raise land at Copythorne, within the New Forest National Park, was being carried out.
Lyndhurst magistrates were told officers visited the site and discovered the landowner had employed J&W Demolition and Recycling Ltd to raise the levels. They were found to be using waste material consisting of wood, soil, concrete, bricks, plastics and Tarmac.
Swanwick Construction argued it had not been in control of the vehicle when the tip happened and said it had been leased to another company. However, the court heard the two companies had the same director and rejected the claim.
Any company that carries or dumps waste must make sure the facility they take it to is properly licensed by the Environment Agency. The site at Copythorne had no licences or planning permission, the court was told.
