A student is following in his mum's footsteps to study at Cambridge.
After getting four A grades in his A-levels, including a distinction in maths, Peter Whiteley is heading to the university 34 years after mum Jane.

The 18-year-old Bay House School pupil will study engineering after getting a Royal Navy scholarship.

Peter, of Newton Close, Stubbington, was overjoyed when he ripped open the envelope with his results yesterday.

'I was nervous and surprised,' he said. 'I've always wanted to go to Cambridge and it's just great news,' he said.

'I can't wait to go and my mum and my dad seemed really proud of me.

'I've always wanted to join the navy too – I just hope I can be based in Portsmouth now.'

After the four-year course Peter will join the navy as an engineering officer.
