An average of just one motorist a day was caught by the 'yellow vulture' speed cameras on the M27, figures show.
The Safer Roads Partnership says 175 vehicles were caught breaking the 50mph speed limit at junctions three to four, near Southampton, and 11 to 12, between Fareham and Cosham, over six months.

The cameras were put up during work to widen the moto
rway to four lanes.

But the partnership has refused to say how many of the 175 vehicles were caught between junctions 11 and 12.

Julian Hewitt, from the partnership, said: 'By issuing the 11 to 12 figures, simple subtraction would reveal the junction three to five figures for works which are still ongoing.

'But we are very pleased. We always knew that the average speed cameras were very effective.

'As with all cameras we do give a bit of leeway, and we stick by the national recommendations.'

The cameras between junctions 11 and 12 were removed last weekend as work to add an extra climbing lane, which began at the end of January, was coming to an end.

The speed limit is still 50mph, but the Highways Agency will remove that when it has finished some minor work on the scheme.

But because this depends on the weather, the agency cannot give an exact date when it will happen.

1 a day?

Well they obviously didnt work very well. I drive that route to and from work every day, I would say that 80% of the vehicles I see are doing more than 50mph.
