Plans to use the M27 hard shoulder in a bid to ease rush hour traffic have been welcomed today.
The Department of Transport has announced a nationwide £6bn package to improve the roads network including the possibility of opening up the hard shoulder of most of the M27.

If the plans are given the green light the motorway from junction 11 at Fareham through to junction 5 at Eastleigh will adopt the scheme.

Councillor Sean Woodward, leader of Fareham Borough Council, said: 'This immediately increases the capacity of the road, and if it can be shown to be safe, I think it could work extremely well.'

Come on, this has been planned for years. The news now is that they want to charge you £5 for the liberty of using the hard shoulder.

Hard shoulder running is completley safe and it works, but it's not always the most effective option. In this case I think the best move for the M27 would be to develop a parallel route - this could be achieved with a wonderful public transport alternative, by making improvements to the A27 or by developing a new route along the line of the A272.

Blimey Mr Rentaquote is as sharp as a button, isn't he? :O))))))

Mind you, what if it doesn't; as Kenwright points out, best not break down. Before "Another Whiteley Resident" chimes in and wibbles on about it "works on the M42", I think it's best to point out that Hampshire drivers aren't well known for care and attention on the motorways. I give it a few hours of implementation before some sleepyhead in a Mercedes ploughs into the back of Mrs Renault with her flat tyre.

Blimey, he must be rubbing off; I meant "Real Whiteley Resident" obviously. ;O))))))))

Hasn't been around much recently. I hear he's been busy helping others with their enquiries. :O))))))

Absolute madness.

IF there is a case for EVER using the hard shoulder for anything other than an emergency, then surely, it can only be to allow more traffic to get OFF the motorway at a junction (thereby reducing the amount of traffic contributing to a hold-up).

Anything else is just asking for trouble and will, most assuredly, lead to accidents.

How will that fit with a local authorities protestations that everything they do is safety-oriented?

Brains of Slugs, the lot of them.
