Police hope a blanket ban on alcohol throughout Fareham from June 1 will also cut anti-social behaviour in the town.
Officers can confiscate alcohol from anyone drinking in a public place, order them to stop or dole out an on-the-spot £50 fine.

Signs will soon start appearing in hot-spots across the area, warning residents about the new powers.

All 274 licensed premises in the borough were contacted about the proposal, and out of the 127 that responded only one objected.

Results compiled by police from August 2005 to July 2006 discovered a quarter of violent crimes in Fareham were specifically alcohol-related and 515 groups of under-18s had their alcohol seized from them by police.
