Sol Campbell is sweating on his Pompey future.
The FA Cup-winning skipper is among 15 players out of contract this summer, none of who have been offered fresh deals.

Tony Adams is currently carefully assessing his squad before deciding who he wants to keep at Fratton Park.

The likes of Sean Davis, Noe Pamarot, Richard Hughes, Kanu, Lauren and Linvoy Primus are all among the 15.

But it's Campbell who is the highest-profile name to feature.

Despite his magnificent service, he will be 35 next September and is currently one of the highest earners at the club.

The former England captain has already been linked with Villarreal, while from January he is entitled to speak to interested parties.

In the meantime, Adams will spend the next few months deliberating over who stays.

And, for the moment, central-defender Campbell and Pompey's other out-of-contract stars will have to wait before their future is decided.

Blues executive chairman Peter Storrie said: 'Sol is out of contract and it's up to Tony to look at it, as he will with Noe, Sean Davis and the others.

'Tony's got some ideas but he wants to have a good look at these things over the next couple of weeks.

'We've got a lot of games coming up now and it's quite a good time to judge.

'There are three home games, then we are away at West Brom – after that we'll sit down and Tony will have his own mind made up of what he wants to do with the players.

'To be honest, I don't think he will give any great thought to the contracts situation until after the January transfer window.

'It gives Tony a good opportunity to see which one of those he wants to retain and which ones he wants to let go.

'And that's something we will do between January and May.'
Campbell is currently nursing a sore toe – a problem which forced him out of last weekend's 0-0 draw at West Ham.

He has yet to return to training, casting doubt whether he will be able to face Hull on Saturday.

In the meantime, Storrie has dismissed recent reports Campbell has already lined up a switch to Spanish side Villarreal.

He added: 'If you go back and look at the past three transfer windows, about one month before the window opens Sol Campbell is supposedly going to Villarreal.

'I have spoken to Sol and he's said "I don't know what you are talking about, I've never heard anything about it".

'We know nothing about it, he knows nothing about it, his lawyer he deals with doesn't know anything about it.

'It makes you wonder if some of these people saying these things have it in their diary every time there's a transfer window.'

They only put Sols name at the top to give this story more gravitas. If he were to go elsewhere I for one would say thank you very much for all you have done for PFC and good luck for the future. Bit surprised Tony is not looking at renewing contracts until after Jan window.

I actually think Richard Hughes is more important than anyone else. Such an under rated player. Sol can be easily replaced by Kaboul who I think is a top class player at CENTRE BACK. Davis can be replaced by Diop whom is not a right midfielder please someone get it in there head he isn't a right midfielder. His best cames are in the middle of the park and Davis is easily replaced by Hughes. Looking foward to up and coming games PUP

'They only put Sol's name at the top to give this story more gravitas' You reckon Kenwright? Nice one Einstein - you're a real media expert aren't you! I would have thought they would have led the story off with the fact Jean-Francois Christophe is out of contract rather than our skipper.

Mr Snotasport why did this story come out yesterday under a different headline? If they put Christophes name at the top do you think it would sell papers?

Yet another negative story from The News!! Why on earth would the real supporters (probably ones who have been fans for more than 60 years) want to know which players will be out of contract in the summer? Why can't they just get behind the team?? We don't want to know who might be staying or going. I will never buy this paper again - but I will look at the website 50 times a day...

Forgive me but please no personal attacks, I always thought that Sol Campbell was a Pompey player. Please get your facts right, the published date for the original story was 19 Nov 2008 as stated on the right hand side of this page.
Apology will be forthcoming I take it?

Today's Vote

Is Avram Grant the man to lead the Pompey revival next season?
Absolutely - he's been an inspiration
Maybe - but his heart has to be in it
No - we need someone proven in the Championship
