Martin Cranie today pledged to prove he is a worthy Pompey successor to Glen Johnson.
The right-back has played a starring role in England under-21s' march to the semi-finals of the European Championships.
Having been rested along with nine others, he is set to return to Stuart Pearce's side for tomorrow's clash with Sweden.
His continued international selection is in stark contrast to his domestic frustration, having featured in just five Blues games in two years.
Yet while he has been stationed with England in Sweden, two of his Fratton Park right-back rivals have departed.
Glen Johnson is poised to seal his switch to Liverpool, while Noe Pamarot has been released.
It leaves Cranie as the only recognised right-back on Pompey's books, although Younes Kaboul can fill in.
And the 22-year-old is gunning to give his all in a bid to show he has what it takes.
He said: 'Being in Sweden, I have not really heard that much about what's going on at the club.
'I've just been catching the late news, getting the papers a couple of days later, but I did eventually hear about Glen. I think people have been expecting it.
'Obviously there's an opportunity at right-back now and I am hoping to get my chance and show what I can do. I am not going to say too much at the moment. I'm just going to get my head down and work hard when pre-season starts.
'I think it's done me a lot of good getting regular games for the England under-21s. We are playing well and hopefully can reach the final.
'In the past it hasn't helped me at Portsmouth not playing too many games. There have been a few different managers since I've been at the club and I don't know who is going to be in charge next season. The situation is very unclear.
'All I can do is show what I can do when pre-season starts and take it from there.
'I'm going to get my head down, roll up my sleeves and work hard – that's all I can do.'
With Sol Campbell's future undecided and Johnson and Pamarot gone, the Blues are likely to be a few defenders short come the start of pre-season training on July 8.
In the meantime, Cranie is poised to pick up his 14th England under-21 cap tomorrow.
And the defender will be pushing hard to take his international form on to the domestic field.
