When Crouch joined Jermain Defoe at Fratton Park in the summer, they were touted as Pompey's most lethal strikeforce for many a year.

But few could have predicted their dominance after Pompey's first 10 games of the season.

Of the 13 goals scored in first-team competitive games, Crouch and Defoe have accounted for 11 of them with only Lassana Diarra and Glen Johnson muscling in on the goalscoring duties.

Crouch netted a fabulous strike in the 2-1 success over Stoke with an overhead scissors kick goal – a skill that is fast becoming his trademark – from a Defoe cross.

And Defoe grabbed his sixth of the season after the break with a low drive just moments after seeing another flashing effort crash back off the post.

But while it was Crouch's goal that was the talk among the fans as they drifted away from Fratton Park, the giant striker is more concerned with his blossoming partnership with his partner in crime.

Crouch said: 'It's been a really good week for the club and for me personally as well.

'Four goals in a week is always nice and it's going well at the moment for me.

'But Jermain has got a few goals as well and the partnership is working really well.

'We said right from the start we believed we would be a good combination. We play to each other's strengths.

'He set up my goal and I've been fortunate to set up a few of his, so it's working well at the moment.

'I don't see any reason why we cannot carry on like this and get even better together.

'We're already on the same wavelength, but you can always improve.'

Crouch, who scored a similar goal for Liverpool in the Champions League two seasons ago, admitted his mind wandered back to that famous strike as he wheeled away in delight to the Pompey fans.

He said: 'I scored one a bit like that for Liverpool and it was very pleasant to see it fly in the back of the net.

'When the ball is pulled back like that I always get excited because I know I can score goals like that.

'As soon as the ball is behind me like that, it's the only way you can get a shot off really, unless you lay it off for someone else.

'Sometimes you try it, you fall on your backside and look stupid.

'But it's great when they fly in.'
