Sir Alex Ferguson blasted referee Martin Atkinson and his boss Keith Hackett after Manchester United's treble dream went up in smoke.
United wasted more than enough chances to win the match but manager Ferguson chose to vent his fury at Atkinson and took at swipe at Hackett, who is in charge of officials.

Ferguson felt United had a blatant penalty denied when Cristiano Ronaldo was blocked by Sylvain Distin.

'It's absolutely ridiculous,' said Ferguson, whose side were denied the chance to repeat their 1999 treble success.

'I cannot explain it. Managers get sacked because of things like that and he's going to referee a game next week.'

He added: 'He (Hackett) is not doing his job properly and he needs to be assessed.

'I'm assessed as a manager, players are assessed, referees should be assessed properly by the right people. That performance today should not be accepted by our game.

'But we didn't need to worry about the referee in terms of the chances that we had.

'The referee's performance – well Keith Hacket, I think is in a nice comfortable position and does nothing really.

'I don't think he makes a contribution to the refereeing performances in the country.'

United assistant boss Carloz Queiroz was also upset at the display of the official, who he branded a 'disgrace'.

Queiroz said: 'What did Diarra expect when he elbowed Ronaldo by the line to put him out.

'This is why the (Martin) Taylors of the game are allowed to survive and the best players are out of the game.'

Sorry, but I thought I have to comment, the only bad tackle in the game was Rooney's attempted 'leg-snapper' against Niko (which was rightly yellow carded). Ok Ronaldo was shoulder charged a couple of times Diarra and Distin, but nothing like the Taylor challenge.
I think Ferguson and Queiroz have to look at the ammount of missed chances their team had before looking around and who else to blame, Saturday wasn't united's day and it WAS POMPEY'S!!!!
I've seen many a game at Fratton park over the years when I've left thinking how on earth did we lose that, it just not your day..

PUP!! (now how to get a ticket!!!!)

Got to say, I've never heard sour grapes sound quite so obvious before! To recall the Taylor incident (which, by the way, is a slight on the poor Birmingham player himself) and liken Pompey's display to it is nothing short of scandalous!
Also, the referee's performance had absoultely NOTHING to do with Man Utd's inability to convert four or five golden chances.
Oh, and to complain that they should have had a penalty for Distin's shoulder barge on the precious Ronaldo completely overlooks the fact that - with the way things were going for Pompey - David James would probably have saved it anyway!!
Would have been nice to have received some praise for our victory from Ferguson. But when you're as bad a loser, as he quite clearly is, the lack of praise merely serves to make the victory even sweeter!!
Well done Harry. Well done Pompey.

Wembley bewaare - The Blue and White Army is on its way!

for years now teams have gone to old trafford aware that the slightest touch on a united player in the box would result in a penalty. on saturday a referee did not give united their standard penalty and fergie comes out with a conspiracy theory against the entire refereeing fraternity. well wake up fergie!!

although a life long pompey supporter i have always enjoyed watching united, spurs, west ham etc because they play attractive football. fergie has also been a manager i much admire but after his petulant, childish, spoilt brat rant after the game he has sunk in my estimation.

increasingly managers of the top teams complain when things go against them, witness aresnnic whinger who blamed the wigan pitch for arsenal's failure to win, seem to remember we did alright there as have other teams. it is about time that these so called 'top' managers were really taken to task by the fa, players cannot get away with saying a thing against the ref or anybody. sending the manager to the stands is a cop out, hit them really hard in their pockets, ban them from the ground and even monitor all their communications to stop the farce that we had between the 'chosen' one and frank clarke at chelsea.

what fergie should have said was, 'pompey played out of their collective socks, we tried but didn't on the day play our best football, and the penalty which pompey got was a good decision though the sending off of our keeper was a bit harsh.' no sour grapes there but only the truth.

Shoulder to shoulder is fair & Distin got in front of Ronaldo. No foul. Kusczak flew out at Baros & took him out after Baros had knocked the ball past him. Foul & penalty. As the last man he must be sent off. Basic rules of the game of football. The other 25 fouls during the game happen in any game every week. So stop whingeing Ferguson. The worst foul was by Rooney which was dangerous play and totally intentional which should also have been a red card. We had a bit of luck. Wembley here we come!
