Defoe injured in England triumph

Jermain Defoe has given Pompey an injury headache following England's glory night.
The Blues' leading scorer hobbled out of Fabio Capello's side's memorable 2-1 triumph against Germany last night.

Starting alongside team-mates David James and Glen Johnson, he was replaced at half-time in Berlin by Spurs' Darren Bent after picking up what looked to be a calf injury.

In Defoe's absence, England went on to clinch victory through skipper John Terry six minutes from time.

The 26-year-old today returned to Pompey to be fully assessed by medical staff.

But his availability remains a major concern ahead of Saturday's Fratton Park clash with Hull.

For the Blues, it was a desperately disappointing end to a night which saw four of their players represent England.

Johnson played the entire match, while James made way for Scott Carson at half-time in a tactical switch.

Peter Crouch completed the quartet when he entered the field in the 90th minute in place of Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Of the four, Johnson in particular caught the eye in the absence of Capello's regular right-back Wes Brown, who was out injured.

The 24-year-old was considered an injury doubt himself in the build-up after suffering bone bruising to a knee against West Ham at the weekend.

But he brushed off concerns to impress in a right-sided partnership with the lively Wright-Phillips.

Meanwhile, Carson did little to convince he is James' long-term replacement at international level following a dreadful mix-up with Terry to gift Patrick Helmes a 63rd-minute equaliser.

Defoe's opening 45 minutes were largely overshadowed by strike partner Gaby Agbonlahor, making his England senior debut.

Glen Johnson - best right back in England. It makes me mad when the pundits say his defending ain't that good. He was part of the back four that helped DJ to a record number of clean sheets last season so his defending can't be that bad!

Would it be possible for one of the organisers of one of the Pompey supporters groups to put together a lobby of a few hundred fans outside The News Centre in Hilsea to petition for FAIR AND SUPPORTIVE COVERAGE - I for one would be there in my Pompey shirt.

PS - I stopped buying The News about 5 years ago for the same reason - what a load of tripe!

Here we go again. Blind fans alert. How exactly was yesterday's story tripe? It simply stated the stadium is under threat unless the council back the retail plans.

And for all you lot who seem to hang off every word Peter Storrie says and can't accept anything negative about Pompey, he himself said on the radio yesterday that he had no problem with the story.

I shall be looking on the pompey web sit for info in future.Peter Storrie made a statement on there yesterday telling it exactly as it is & also critisising the news.
I know Storrie has his critics but he's in a no win situation, if he doesn't give out any info the club are keeping us in the dark, and if he gives an interview to a two bob bit journalist from the NEWS they make their own story up to sell more papers.
To be honest judging by the anti news comments on here i think the paper is going to be in a lot more financial trouble than the club unless they can unload a few high earners and bring in some fresh new blood who are proud of club and city!
Perhaps Harry Can find them some jobs in London!

Blueboy55. Please look at the Pompey website for a statement from the club about yesterdays headline.

The Problem with the story was that it wasn't "NEWS" it was on the front page and told us nothing we didn't already know! How can that merit a front page?
It also intimated a problem between council and club which is obviously not the case.
Maybe tomorrows headline will be "Harry in talk with spurs".

Yes Kenwright - HEADLINE - not the story, though is it?

I have spoken to someone at The Quay who said Storrie gave that interview this week and wanted the story in the paper so I'd say it was news. The retail stuff wasn't new but the council problem was.

These bad-news stories are being picked up at a national level the next day - see the BBC and Sky who are now also reporting about the stadium 'problems'. If these stories are not based in fact then they should not reported as they are undermining the club as we approach the transfer window. As a result they are more likely to make players want to leave and mean it will be harder to attract new players.

Where do the club stand on supporting The News? Is the spat of a few years back over, or still continuing? I remember PFC stopped giving The News access to the players & staff before because of a similar run of stories. It would serve them right if this happened again.
