Harry angered by Purse reprieve

HARRY REDKNAPP today slammed Cardiff defender Darren Purse's escape from a three-match ban.
The Bluebirds centre-back was shown a straight red card in last weekend's 3-3 draw at Burnley for a challenge on Andy Cole that left the former Pompey striker needing 10 stitches in a leg wound.

But on Tuesday, a Football Association of Wales panel overturned the decision, meaning Purse is free to skipper his side in the FA Cup final when they face Pompey.

Although Redknapp insists he has no problem with Purse playing in the match, he took issue with the fact that it is the Welsh FA who have made the decision to overturn the dismissal.

And Redknapp questioned whether his players would receive the same treatment from the English FA if any of them were red-carded in tomorrow's trip to Middlesbrough and were subsequently banned for the Wembley showpiece on May 17.

Redknapp said: 'If we get a red card this weekend, obviously I'm sure the English FA will want to help us and overturn that.

'You don't think I'm being serious, do you?

'We wouldn't get any help at all, would we?

'We'd get a player banned and that would be it – there's nothing you can do about it.

'I don't want to see the boy (Purse) miss the FA Cup final, but I read that Andy Cole said it was the worst tackle he'd ever received.

'Cardiff play in the English league, play in the English cup, want to qualify to represent England in the UEFA Cup and then, when they get a player sent off, it goes before the Welsh FA.

'How can that be right? It's just unreal really.

'I like Darren Purse and I don't want to see him suspended for the Cup final.

'I wouldn't want to see anyone miss the Cup final, but in all honesty, it's a bit farcical.'

As a Welsh club, Cardiff's disciplinary issues are governed by the Welsh FA – even though they play in English competitions.

But Redknapp believes those rules need to be addressed.

He said: 'I'm not making a big fuss about it – it makes no difference to me if he plays or not.

'You just want the same rules for everybody.

'I'm sure anyone who has got any sense will look at it and go "This is strange isn't it?".'

Cardiff have already been awarded special dispensation to represent England in the UEFA Cup should they beat Pompey at Wembley.

But Redknapp insists he has no problem with that decision.

He said: 'I'm 100 per cent behind them playing in the UEFA Cup if they win. They are playing in an English competition so it's right that they should qualify if they win.'

I totally agree with Harry. I have no problem with them playing in the EUFA Cup for England, but as he said, its an English Competition, so why are they connected in any way to the Welsh FA, its like having your cake and eating it. Same goes with the Welsh National Anthem, this is Cardiff of ENGLISH Championship, V Pompey of ENGLISH Premier League. Wales has NO Bearing on this competition. I would like the English FA, to insist Cardiff choose between them and Wales next season, instead of Wales and England both having a say on Cardiff.

I agree with PompeyMidge for the Welsh to rescind Purse's ban is a disgrace, looking at it on youtube it was horrendous. I emailed a complaint to the FA asking them if the FA Cup final had been taken over by the Welsh FA and whether they were happy that the referees decision was overruled by the Welsh so that Purse could play in the final, I also asked them if a Pompey player gets sent off in the next 2 games whether he would be allowed to play in the final. No reply of course.

This is a total farce, The welsh FA should have no say on anything related to the English leagues.
The English FA should be ashamed they've allowed this and the national anthem debate to even come up. What a joke they are.

I even wrote to the FA voicing my concerns on the national anthem debate and my reply was as follows.........

"Thank you for contacting The Football Association.  An FA Board meeting was held last week where, amongst other items discussed, it was agreed that the Welsh National Anthem would be played ahead of the forthcoming FA Cup Final on 17th May.
The decision to include both anthems was taken as this will be the first time since 1927 that two clubs from different countries will be playing in The FA Cup Final and we felt it appropriate that this should be recognised.
While I appreciate this may not alleviate your concerns, I would nevertheless like to thank you for taking the time to write.  The Customer Relations team exists in order to collate views from the general public, build a picture of public opinion and feed this back internally within The FA.  With this in mind, please rest assured, your comments have been noted"

Perhaps the Welsh F.A. can also overturn the rule about Defoe being cup-tied?

Totally agree with Harry - our players would get banned for the final if they were to be sent off.

The Welsh FA have gone soft - we need consistency and I think the English and Welsh FA's need to have a little chat.

Fingers crossed the ref keeps his cards in his pockets tomorrow.

As for the Welsh FA, its hopefully going to come back and bite them. Its a disgrace, its corruption and it shows them for the two bob outfit they really are. It does also show how pathetic the English FA are...but we already knew that.

If the Welsh can have 'Land of our Fathers' played at the cup final why can't we have Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory'?
After all 'God Save the Queen' is the BRITISH anthem!
At the Commonwealth Games we always have Elgar's rousing tune whenever there is an English Gold medal to celebrate.

Today's Vote

How will Pompey fare against Cardiff in the FA Cup final?
Pompey are too good for them. We will win at a canter!
It will be tight, but Harry's boys will just nick it.
Cardiff will break Blues hearts and destroy the Cup dream!
It will go to the lottery of penalties and then it's anybody's guess!
