Harry vows to keep Mendes

Published Date: 25 July 2008
Harry Redknapp today promised: Pedro Mendes is going nowhere.
The Pompey boss underlined his desire to keep the former Portugal international in the wake of talk of a move to Rangers.

The Blues have rubbished that and Redknapp has insisted the midfielder is a big part of his plans.

With Sulley Muntari on his way to Inter Milan and the Blues manager keen to cash in on Sean Davis, Mendes is now seen as a key player.

That's a significant turnaround, with the 29-year-old seemingly on his way out at the end of last season.

But Mendes came in for the FA Cup final and has started every match in pre-season.

Redknapp revealed Pompey have not received offers for the player – and were not welcoming any.

He said: 'There's been no offers for Pedro, but we are not looking to sell him.

'He came in for me and played in my Cup final team last season.

'He played a big role in that game, so there is no reason why he won't still be a part of things here.

'I thought before the Cup final we don't keep the ball as well without Pedro.

'We can pass the ball better with him in the team.

'He is a proper footballer and has always shown that for us.'

Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie put talk of Mendes moving to Rangers down to agents.

He said: 'I do not know where it's come from.

'Pedro is part of the squad and Harry definitely wants him to stay.

'There's nothing in it. I think it's just agents stirring again.'

brands and trueblue. what a right pair of fools you two are, i've been supporting pfc for forty years and have realised that sometimes you just cant turn down an offer like this for muntari. sell and re-build thats the name of the game and for me reknapp's proved he's one of the best at it.
and before any one gives me any stick, i've been to over 80 different grounds with pompey and yes i hate the fools from up the road but i have gotten over redknapp being stupid and its got to be about time people got off his back.

Mendes is class, just what you need for those European games that tend to be a bit slower paced. I hope we do keep hold of him.

bigfisback, completely agree. Don`t think we can afford to lose Mendes, his class and experience will be needed in prem and europe. PUP

I think mendes is a far better footballer than Muntari. He is less reckless, a better passer and a more experienced head who realises that football is now all about being part of the squad and not necessarily always part of the first team. Don't forget he has already played the "squad system" under Mourinho at Porto...and won the Champion's League ! That's probably one of the reason's he is still at pompey, because unlike some of you on this site, he realises what professional football is all about !!

Great profit Harry, though sorry to see Muntari go...still it would be good to see SWP and for Mendes to be back in the side, a great and reliable player. If we can just get cover for left back then we have an awesome squad. I would prefer to keep Sean Davis for midfield cover for Diop, Diarra & Mendes.
Play Up Pompey!

I wish the guys on this site that slag Harry off constantly would go back to being Man Utd supporters.

Sacha is fantastic, but he isn't a bottomless pit of money. We need to balance the books a little bit and if by selling Muntari (who at £12.7M is a great bit of business) it means we can add more quality players then that is what we NEED to do.

We have never had it so good as Pompey supporters which inevitably means that you start getting the 'I've supported Pompey all my life (except for that 15year spell as a utd supporter)' brigade filling this site with absolute ****.

Harry is a legend, Storrie has done wonders for this club and Sacha is no Abramovich so start being a bit more realistic.

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
