If Defoe goes, I will, too

Tony Adams reiterated his desire to keep Jermain Defoe and warned: If he goes, then I will, too.
Pompey's top goalscorer continues to be linked with a move away from Fratton Park in the January transfer window.

But Adams insists the fantastic support he is getting from Blues owner Sacha Gaydamak means he will not be forced into selling any of his top stars.

Defoe spurned a host of chances to bury wobbling West Ham in the goalless draw at Upton Park on Saturday.

Despite his off-day in front of goal, though, Adams has no doubt the front-man will help him 'stay in this job by scoring goals'.

Pompey's boss said: 'Defoe's a threat in front of goal and I'm sure there will be some big clubs trying to get him, but hands off because he's mine.

'Big offers? I can't wait because the owner has been very supportive and although I've not made an issue of it I've told him that everyone stays who I want to stay or I don't do the job.

'I told him that at the very start.

'He was very supportive of Harry (Redknapp) and now he's being very supportive of me.

'He phones me on the way home and says "what do you want, Tony, how can I help you" and I say "keep J Defoe where he is and there's no problem".

He says "fine, anything else?" He's totally behind me.'

Previous reports have suggested Pompey would have to sell or offload star players in January to ease alleged debts.

But ex-Arsenal and England ace Adams told The News last week he has his eye on one or two signings in the next window, while Defoe himself revealed he was not looking for a move away from Fratton Park.

Adams' comments also suggest he is confident of keeping the likes of Lassana Diarra at the club beyond the January transfer window.

The classy Frenchman has been continually linked with a move away as well, with former Blues boss Harry Redknapp believed to be keen to take him to Spurs.

However, Diarra is set to be out of action for Pompey for the next three weeks.

The centre midfielder left Upton Park on crutches on Saturday with a suspected ankle injury.

The Blues' biggest asset limped off in the first half following a crunching tackle from West Ham's Scott Parker.

And Adams will be made to wait to find the extent of the problem, with Diarra forced to link up with France ahead of their international with Uruguay this week.

I read a story saying that Diarra has a 10m get out clause in his contract. If thats the case then I doubt we'll be able to keep him whether Sasha likes it or not

I read that £10 million get-out clause too. Strange that we apparently turned down £15 million for Diarra on seadline day!

Why does that not suprise me, though it is speculation. It wouold be typical of Pompey to allow allow a player of such quality to leave on the cheap. I can see many of us having no fingernails throughout January. If there were to be one player leave it would not surprise me if it were to be Niko, I'm sure harry would love to have him at Spurs as I'm sure he would link up and bring the best out of Modric. But I would not want to see him go for less than 8 mill, he may be a qualtiy player and capable but he does not set us alight.

8 million for Kranky are you having a laugh. Just remember we paid 7 million for Utaka so on that reckoning Kranky is worth 15 at least.

I like the sentiment Tony, but it's a dangerous game to play. Come January if the results havn't gone our way he could sell Defoe and wave good bye to you!

This is where Tony worries me, he sometimes does not know when to keep his thoughts to himself.

With only Nugent and 50 year old King Kanu as backup I think I might have said the same. I do wish that Tony kept this sort of thing within the club. I thought the days of the press winding up people to get newsworthy items had gone when Milan left.

If we can sell Kranky to at least balance the books in the short term I'd be happy with that. We got by without him in the early part of the season so we probably wouldn't even need to buy a replacement.

Agree with Velocityfan, and think that Tony needs some advice on how to deal with the press.
I can see nothing in the article that warrants the headline above it.
The local press seem intent on destabilising the club at a time when a period of calm is required.
Banner headlines may sell a couple of extra papers today, but a decline in Pompey's fortunes would considerably reduce sales in the long term.
Why couldn't the headline be, 'Sasha backs Tony in the transfer market'? Quite a few would have bought a paper to see what that was about!
