Younes Kaboul today told Pompey: I want to join only you.
The Spurs defender is desperate to link up with Harry Redknapp at Fratton Park next season.

And the Frenchman is prepared to go to any lengths to make sure the move becomes reality.

Pompey are battling the likes of Juventus, Fiorentina and Hamburg, along with two Premier League clubs for the 22-year-old.

Kaboul has fallen out of favour under boss Juande Ramos at White Hart Lane after his £8.2m move last summer.

He is now free to leave – and has made it clear Pompey is his preferred destination.

It is understood Kaboul is prepared to resist any efforts to be forced towards moving to other clubs.

A source close to the player said: 'Younes' priority is to join Portsmouth.

'He is not interested in joining anyone else and has made that clear to Tottenham.

'He wants to play for Harry. He is the one who has made the greatest effort to sign him.

'Something is very, very close to happening. Younes doesn't want Tottenham to be unreasonable now.

'If that happens he will fight because he wants to join only Portsmouth.
'Younes feels people didn't see the best of him at Tottenham.

'But he was wanted by all the world when he was in France, and you don't become a bad player overnight.

'Harry watched him closely back then and knows what he is capable of.

'He played all the time when he first came to Tottenham, but then the new manager came in and made things hard for him.

'He still scored four goals, though. He is still a young boy and is sure Harry is the one to get the best out of him.'

The one major sticking point over Pompey completing their second signing of the close-season is the fee Spurs are likely to command for Kaboul.

They want to recoup as much of the money they paid Auxerre for the player last summer.

A fee in excess of £5m is likely to be the minimum they will ask for.

And with the Londoners paying the French side the fee in full for the player, they will want the money they earn for selling him in one lump sum.

Pompey are more keen to do a deal with an initial payment and add-ons relating to appearances.

The move is unlikely to accelerate until Redknapp and chief-executive Peter Storrie return from breaks next week.

Come on Pompey - We've joined the big clubs by winning the FA Cup last year.... If we want to progress and push on as a club we have to start paying the fee's and wages that these sort of players demand and in most cases deserve.... 3-4 big players could make all the difference and the impact on the club could be enormous in helping raising the clubs stature within the game - Come on 'Arry, Peter and sasha... Be Brave!!!!

So, he played all the time at the start of last season - when Spurs struggled at the bottom of the table and leaked like a sieve - and then didn't play under Juande Ramos, when they won a Wembley final, became difficult to beat and climbed into a comfy mid-table position. Sounds like he is worth every penny of £5m then.
He didn't become a bad player overnight I'm sure, however the signs aren't so good. Perhaps Harry and Tony A can work their magic - but only at the right price.

At least he's a young player and Harry can make him a better one. Working with Tony Adams will benefit him too. And playing for a bad Tottenham team shouldn't be held against him - they had Paul Robinson in goal remember! He'll be much more confident with players like David James, Sol Campbell and Glen Johnson around him.

I agree Kaboul did not become a bad player overnight - but some of his mistakes were schoolboy errors. Having Jamo & Distin around him will not stop those kind of errors.

I have no doubt Harry & Tony Adams can coach him effectively to minimise mistakes. But what we pay for him MUST be realistic to his most recent form, which is therefore considerably less than £5m.

I think Mikael Silvestre would be a far better purchase and probably in a similar price bracket.

What people have to realise is that this player was monitored by a lot of top clubs. The reason he went to tottenham is because they were willing to pay silly money on a young player as part of their drive to snap up Europe's brightest young talent.
He was the french under 21 captain and a really good player at what was then a good club. Karembeu is always scouting France for us and would have seen him play a lot, all he needs is a bit of confidence and with the French influence at the club could go on to become a really great defender. Let's get him! then get Mensah.

Great signing if we can get him. May have fallen out of favour at Spurs for bad play but we should all remember about calamities James made before he joined us, now he is one of the most solid keepers in the premiership. With the right people around him, Kaboul can shine.
