New plans for Pompey stadium include concert arena

Pompey hope to build a concert arena, the biggest of its kind on the south coast, as part of the plans.
The 10,000-seat arena would sit alongside the stadium on Horsea Island, and the club hope it will help attract big-name acts to the city.

In recent years Portsmouth has looked on with envy as stars turn out in Southampton.

The football club hope by including the arena in their plans, along with a large new shopping development, it will keep the money rolling in all year round, not just on matchdays.

Although the city council favours a plan with a focus on housing as part of the development, fearing that shops at the site could threaten Gunwharf Quays and the proposed Northern Quarter development, Peter Storrie is confident the council needn't worry about that.

He said: 'We are talking about things required for the area: a couple of hotels, a supermarket. We are not talking about fashion retail stores, it's not even going to affect Gunwharf and Northern Quarter.

'It's other types of retail that will just make it profitable for us, and banks will loan on those types of things. They won't loan just on residential, and that's really the change.'

Since when have we looked on in envy at anything that lot down the road do?
Cracking idea about the concert arena as long as they manage it better than the Guildhall is at present.
Some bands now refuse to come to Pompey due to the lack of interest and advertising and this can only get worse now that PCC and the police have seen fit to make Guildhall Walk a no go area for cars. With the lack of parking in this area it means theatre goers now have to run the gauntlet of pubs and clubs when accessing this venue. Not a pretty sight on a saturday I can tell you.

Certainly a good idea, though I'm not sure 10,000 would be big enough to attract big stars. Though if the ground could be used for bigger concerts then it would be good as a smaller venue. Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if powers that be vetoed that idea.
