Pompey have announced it will freeze any plans to move to Horsea Island and instead redevelop Fratton Park.
The football club's new plan will see the club's current home increase in capacity to 30,000.

The decision was made to put on ice the Horsea Island scheme following a number of planning and financial issues.

These include:

- New exits to the Horsea Island site from the M27

- A new bridge from Tipner to Horsea Island to link the two developments

- A change to the city plan proposed by the council to accommodate the stadium will still need to be subject to an inquiry by an independent inspector appointed by the Secretary of State

- The issue of the 'credit crunch', which has affected housing and almost all other developments, as well as lenders' attitudes to large projects

In a statement Pompey said: 'The club's ultimate aim remains a 40-45,000-seater stadium at Horsea Island near Port Solent, along with a multi purpose arena and residential and retail development to help fund and support the project.'

Initial work on Fratton Park would see the pitch turned 90 degrees and see two new stands, an extension to the Fratton End and refurbishments made to the south stand.

This work would be paid for by selling off part of the site to a major supermarket.

The club would also build a new club shop, ticket office and club offices.

Pompey say work could start before the end of the year, subject to planning permission.

The capacity would initially grow to 25,000 for the start of the 2010/2011 season and 30,000 once the work is completed by the beginning of the 2011/2012 season.

A planning application for the work at Fratton Park would be submitted 'as soon as possible', the club said.

Deep joy... here we go again... why is it so difficult for Pompey to get permisison and finance to build a stadium, when every other club in the land can get it and move on..... I despair.

When the City puts the Northern Quarter on hold for 6 years, i think the knock on effect has probably forced the clubs hand. Still, a 25,00 and then 30,000 seater for now is better than what we have, and shows the clubs desire to still push forward, if just a bit slower than first hoped. I suspect the slip roads and bridges were once part of the northern quarter plans, but now would need to be funded by the club as Portsmouth City Council find themselves cash strapped. Hence the clubs decision to slow things down a bit.

Well here we go again, now correct me if i am wrong but wasnt the supposed capacity going to be about 35,000 when the last plans were submitted to the council for the 90 degree turn. now we are down to 30,000. Kevin George i agree with you. Ever since the days of Farlington marshes and the migrating geese, we have always had a brick wall put up against us. Even teams as low down as the blue star premiership are getting new grounds. What do we have to do to get a new ground. If there is anybody from the city council reading this perhaps they would care to make a comment

A sensible decision in the current environment, particularly as the Club are still trying to attract a buyer and the burden of having to fund a new stadium does not help. As previous designs have already been developed (and approved I think) this scheme should actually happen this time. I doubt that I will live long enough to see a brand new stadium anyway. Main focus is survival this season - and next. PUP

A bit of a blow but hardly a surprise. Maybe 25000 is more realistic than 40000 when we can`t even fill 20000.

As to a new stadium : pigs might fly !!

Play up Pompey . Best wishes for 3 points against The Toffees.

It is the same as the previous plan but without the upper tier over the West Stand. The reduced capacity seems a reasonable compromise with the prospect of a new stadium at Horsea still being the ultimate aim. Unlike many towns and cities where stadia have been built in recent years Portsmouth does not have abundant areas of countryside or derelict brownfield sites ripe for development within its boundaries, nor does it have the depressed area status for the government to throw millions of pounds of grant-aid in its direction. Be patient.

Brilliant news. I was going to move up to the north stand from the Fratton End as the old mince pies are not so good. Now if I wait the half way line will come to me.
If I was cynical I would say this is the reason for the reduction in prices for north stand season tickets so they dont kick off when the pitch is turned round.
Play up Pompey

Can Nadir Ciftci go on to really establish himself at Pompey?
Absolutely, he's a star of the future
Maybe, but he's got a long way to go
He needs a loan spell away, then we'll see how good he is
No chance, he'll fade away
