Pompey's good fortune continued last night as plans for a multi-million pounds new training complex were approved.
The football club's plans for a new training ground in Lee-on-the Solent got unanimous support when they went before Gosport councillors.

Work on the specialist complex in Cherque Way will start within two months.

It comes after the club unveiled plans for a new stadium and signed top-class striker Peter Crouch.

A delighted Peter Storrie, the club's chief executive, told The News: 'If we got something like a 60/40 vote it's a good thing, but 100 per cent – you can't ask any more than that. Gosport has opened its arms to us.

'The training ground is vital on two fronts – we need world class facilities for a world class team, to attract the players. It's also very important we put the whole operation in one unit – the academy and the football team on one site.'

The 35-acre training complex will house 10 full-size pitches, two mini pitches and a three-quarter size pitch. It will be almost 10 times the size of the club's current Eastleigh training ground.

A 18,000sq ft building will house changing rooms, medical facilities and a gym to provide players with physical training, medical attention and nutrition under one roof.

There will also be a three-quarter size indoor pitch for the club's academy, which will have its own separate building.

A previous application to build a training ground in Fareham was rejected earlier this year.

Mr Storrie added: 'I was very annoyed about the Fareham site. We spent a lot of time and money on that site. But this is actually a far better site.'

Two full-size pitches will be dedicated to community use and the indoor facilities will be available for schools in the Gosport area.

The centre will provide 14 new permanent jobs.

Pompey will help fund visitor facilities for the Alver Valley Country Park, which will be built next to the site by the council.

Permission was granted on the condition that wildlife on the site, including badgers, would be protected.

A 100% vote. Sit up and take note of this Portsmouth City Council, this is how to process an application without complication. Well done to all involved from PFC and Gosport Council. This is a major acquisition to developing us into a side to break the top 4, all we need now is the ground to play in and one the supporters so rightly deserve! PUP

Portsmouth CC have turned down one planning application from Pompey in the history of the club - that was the Milton End application of 1990. And that was a really stupid plan.
Someone explain to me why Portsmouth CC are at fault? They've approved every stadium application plan ever put in front of them - three currently. If Milan had actually got it together to build the grounds he had permission for.........
Pompey have never had a new stadium for one reason only, incompetent owners without the funds to build one. Why is that people who saw what the Gregorys' and Deacon did to Pompey assume that it is anyone elses fault there is no new stadium? Those people were rubbish at running the club. When Milan eventually submitted a couple of stadium plans both went through - unanimously! Why didn't he build them? He didn't have the dosh.

Don't blame the council, just thank our lucky stars Sasha turned up, someone who can actually deliver.

Great News!! Thanks Gosport City Council. The new training facility is just what we need and perfect timing for a club in Europe. Shame Portsmouth aren't as helpful to this club. Portsmouth City Council must now respond by giving us the stadium approval. Thanks to Sacha and Peter Storie for making this happen. I had my doubts when Peter Storie first came to work for Milan but he's made me eat my words!! Great guy to have running this great club. Well Done Peter!!

Mike Hall - This was agreed quicker than a curry goes through my system on a Sunday morning. The ground applications are always put on hold by people in PCC who have always tried to stop us progressing, but now they have now choice due to the team being successful and people power generated by thousands turning out on to the streets to show their support for a top 6 club making waves. Hopefully they can now take note, which was my point before, and do the honourable thing and sign off the land to PFC. PUP !!!
