Pompey's plans delayed until next month

Plans for Pompey's multi-million pound new training complex have fallen behind schedule.
Work at the Lee-on-the-Solent site was set to start before the end of September after being approved by Gosport Borough Council in July.

But because of administrative hold-ups, work isn't going to get under way until the end of October – at the earliest.

Peter Storrie, the club's chief executive, said: 'We still have a lot of paperwork to get through and are still waiting for environmental reports and things like that which take a lot of time.

'These things just take longer than you expect but we hope to get everything sorted out and start quite quickly – within a month hopefully, so the delay shouldn't cause a problem at all.'

The 35-acre training complex, opposite the Cherque Farm estate, will include 10 full-size pitches, two mini pitches and a three-quarter-size pitch.

There will also be an 18,000sq ft building which will house changing rooms, medical facilities and a gym. It will be almost 10 times the size of the club's current Eastleigh training ground.

Gosport Borough Council, which approved the club's planning application unanimously, said the site was ready to be developed.

Council leader Dave Smith said: 'These hold-ups aren't a problem at all. They are free to move in whenever they want and start work.

'We are looking forward to work on the complex starting and can't wait to welcome the club, as the facilities are great news for Gosport.'

Pompey looked to Lee-on-the-Solent after a planning application to build a training ground close to Titchfield Abbey, Titchfield, was rejected earlier this year.

The club has agreed to build two full-size pitches for community use and the indoor facilities will be available for schools in the Gosport area.

The centre will create 14 new permanent jobs and Pompey will help to fund visitor facilities for the Alver Valley Country Park, which will be built next to the site.

Seems any sort of building work in the south coast (apart from offices for some reason), always gets delayed.

And is this really news? It would have been a newsworthy event if it said "Pompey plans on track"

More tap-dancing......and this is just the training complex.
I think they should modify the artists impressions of Pompey's new home in future to include pictures of teleportation booths, flying cars and the starship Enterprise - all common features of the 23rd Century.

Dave Smith's comments (council leader) are quite interesting: "These hold-ups aren't a problem at all. They are free to move in whenever they want and start work."

Obviously the availability of cheap credit has put this project on hold too. Understandable really. I can't see this really moving forward until the problems in the financial system unwind. It wouldn't be sensible (or maybe even possible) to take out big loans at this time. The stadium certainly won't happen for some time. But not the end of the world, we have the best team we've ever had & we're in Europe. Could be worse!

Well spotted PompeyTim, If they're that keen, would think they'd be knocking on the door. agree with your comment about the current state of finances too, makes sense to hold back for a short while.

The Country, the World is gripped with Debt, so its ludicrous to jump in too quickly and create more for the club.

We all know the site and plans are agreed, so we know we are getting training facilities.

It just makes sense to wait for better financial climates, be it a week a month or even a few months.

As said by others, we are enjoying life at the moment, so lets continue to walk, not run and trip over.

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
