Pompey are set to be handed a welcome boost by agreeing a new four-year deal with Glen Johnson.
And the Blues are confident of keeping Sean Davis and Richard Hughes at Fratton Park, too, after offering the duo contract extensions.

It was feared Johnson would be another big-name departure this month, with the likes of Liverpool believed to be interested in the right-back.

But despite the exit of Lassana Diarra and likely sale of Jermain Defoe, the England international is thought to be happy to stay at Pompey.

And talks are progressing to extend his current deal, which does not run out until 2011, to 2013.

Meanwhile, key performers Davis and Hughes are to be offered new contracts – six months earlier than planned.

Boss Tony Adams had previously insisted he was willing to wait until the end of the season before deciding on the futures of 15 out-of-contract players.

As well as Davis and Hughes, that list also includes Sol Campbell, Noe Pamarot, Kanu and Glen Little.

Yet he's had a change of heart, with Hughes and Davis expected to pen fresh deals this week.

The two unquestionably deserve the recognition and have made no secret of their desire to remain at Pompey.

Both were out of favour under Harry Redknapp, yet have come roaring back with Davis, in particular, catching the eye following some outstanding recent all-action displays.

Hughes was kept out of Saturday's Bristol City draw with a knee injury aggravated against Arsenal.

Great news with Johnson think I'd rather keep him than a Defoe who's displaying the same sulky little boy he did at Spurs before. And better news with his sale if Mail to be believed - $15mill plus waiving whatever was owing on Kaboul.
All down to TA now - how wisely will he buy ??

That has surprised me as I thought he'd be on his way out. If Glen can sign on for a new deal, this will be encouraging news to get other players to do the same or get new ones in.

GREAT NEWS! I was gutted to hear he may be leaving! With the poorer defensive displays when he isnt around showed just how much we need a guy with his pace!

And with Belhadj signing up makes it even better...Just a "bye bye Dummy Spitting Defoe" hopefully on his way back to being Harry's lap dog, it should allow for a new striker and hopefully a midfielder or 2, then maybe, just maybe, pompey can up their game and get out of the lower part of the league

Last thing I wanna see is Pompey fighting for relegation!

This is excellent news for theclub, but I am disturbed abour the Defoe phone call claims. He has said he received calls on his mobile phone. My mobile phone retains the numbers of calls received and calls missed. One assumes that Mr Defoe has a high quality phone which is likely to have such a facility, Why has he not reported this to the police who would be able to trace the caller - or is he trying to justify his desire to return to the arms of Harry? Anybody else have thourhts on the Defoe claim?

Re the mobile phone scam I think if it were truly genuine he'd have approached the police and not gone public hence I suspect another tantrum, one designed to facilitate his move. Harry similarly had to make a load of BS excuses, as if that made his actions more honorable. Think they're a good pair, personally.

I can't believe people are trying to switch this onto Defoe. I am not impressed with him. But to do these phonecalls and even vaguely defend them is disgusting. These people who do such things, do not represent PFC fans or the club. We should make that 100% clear and get these prehistoric vile fans out of our club.

He has only engineered a move away, nothing truely evil. Get over yourself, you sad little fans that think that sort of behaviour is anywhere near acceptable.

You think this helps Portsmouth's reputation? You think this will make other big name stars want to come here? No, it is stupid.

Here's laughable paper talk for you....The Times have said there is interest in Utaka from 2 clubs! Can you believe this rubbish they make up.

Great news to hear that Johnson is about to sign a new deal, would be good to keep Davis as well. Fingers crossed for some news incoming transfers soon!

How nice to see and hear John PFC Westwood back in the Fratton End on Saturday.

Is this a sign that common sense will prevail at Fratton Park during 2009?
