The former Blues striker, who netted 115 goals in 224 appearances for the Fratton Park outfit, has been named as development coach.
Whittingham's role will include working specifically with the Pompey strikers on all aspects of their game, but will also help bridge the gap between Ian Woan's under-18 side and Adams' first team.
He will also assume control of the club's reserves and be responsible for future relations with Belgian feeder club Zulte Waregem.
The 44-year-old, who has spent over six years as a PFA coach motivator in the south west and has been working for Pompey as an academy technical coach, said he was thrilled to be joining Adams' backroom staff.
'Tony Adams told me about this role and asked if I would be interested, and I was,' he said.
'I am really excited about the job.'
Adams claimed Whittingham would be 'a great addition' to his coaching set-up.
'Guy is a great addition to the coaching team,' he said.
'We have been working one man down since I took over and his experience and knowledge of Portsmouth Football Club will be invaluable.
'Guy will be involved with everything we do with the first-team squad and will be working specifically with the strikers on their movement, shooting and finishing.
'He's hard working, honest, loyal and Pompey through and through.
'He was a big player for the club in his time, with an outstanding scoring record.'
